Concrete Experience
During the sixth week of our internship at the Coastal Resource Management Program (CRMP) office, we participated in various activities. Throughout the week, I attended seminars about the responsibilities and functions of the CRMP. Moreover, our supervisors showed us a short film produced by CENRO, which received an award for Best Advocacy Campaign at the Manhattan Film Festival. At times, we interns were also invited to attend office meetings, where we gained further knowledge about the city’s environmental laws and the possible penalties for violating them. Although we were assigned to a specific program, we were also given separate tasks for the office’s upcoming projects, such as creating the Historical Background of the Molok River. I helped draft a questionnaire to be used in interviewing the residents of Molok River, with the assistance of my fellow interns. The daily travel to the office was tiring, but the knowledge and experience we gained made every effort worthwhile. I truly appreciate our supervisors for their continuous guidance and support throughout our internship at the CRMP program, especially for making internship identification cards exclusively for us.
Reflective Observation
I learned that the CRMP’s work focuses on coastal areas such as Buayan, Baluan, and Bula. I listened attentively to the discussions and discovered that General Santos City is home to a diverse range of marine fauna, including dolphins, whale sharks, and dugongs. Our supervisor also showed us examples of the activities they conduct in the field, such as underwater diving, and rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles and crocodiles. I also learned about the coastal flora, such as mangroves that protect the shoreline and serve as breeding grounds for marine fauna, as well as the presence of numerous seagrasses that support the marine ecosystem.
Abstract Conceptualization
Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) best describes my experiences during the current week of internship. Research indicates that this theory is based on the idea that learning occurs through active engagement with experiences. Through my active participation in various tasks during the internship such as attending lectures and seminars, drafting questionnaires, and observing the activities conducted by the CRMP, I was able to reflect on these experiences and improve my knowledge and understanding of different concepts related to our work.
Future Application
It is apparent that my experiences during the internship at the Coastal Resource Management Program (CRMP) will be very useful in the future. The knowledge acquired through seminars can be applied to future projects related to environmental resource protection, especially in coastal areas. Research indicates that active participation improves knowledge and skills, and I plan to apply this by continuing to learn through real experiences. This parallels my goal of becoming more responsible and skilled in contributing to environmental protection and coastal resource management.
